Ingredients-
-
8 oz self rising flour (known in England as self-raising flour)
-
A pinch of salt
-
1 1/2 oz superfine sugar (the English call superfine sugar, caster sugar)
-
1 1/2 oz butter (best if at room temperature)
-
A little under 5 fl oz milk
Pre-heat the oven to 425°F
Grease a baking tray
Sift the flour, then rub in the butter, add the sugar and salt and mix together. Then add the milk a bit at a time mixing as you do so. Lightly flour your hands (to avoid the mixture sticking to them) and kneed the mixture to a dough. It may be necessary at this time to add a little more milk if the 'dough' feels at all dry.
Lightly flour your rolling surface and rolling-pin and roll out the 'dough' to a thickness of 1 inch. Cut into rounds using a cutter of approximately 2 inches in diameter. Put the scones on the baking sheet that you have previously greased and dust their tops with flour. Bake in the oven for approximately 15 minutes.
The scones may need a little longer or shorter cooking time depending on the size of your scones.
To Serve your Scones as a Baby Shower Treat. Allow your scones to cool, slice them in half and spread each half with butter and jelly - Delicious.
The English call Jelly, Jam and use strawberry jam.
For an extra special treat spread with butter, jelly and heavy cream - known in England as double cream. This would make an ideal treat for guests at a baby shower.
